Random Hacks of Kindness June Global event took place this weekend (2-3 June). UNISA Pro bono computing (Jabu), in partnership with GTUG Pretoria (Ishmael) and House4Hack (Schalk) organised the Pretoria Event. Humbling to see so many talented individuals willing to hack for humanity and making a difference!

Solutions
The event saw just under 40 participants contributing over the weekend with the following solutions – (glad I was not a judge, IMHO each of these deserved to win):
- H2O Detective (Winner) – local government water management (see below for more)
- Citizen Reporting (First runner up) – multi channel citizen reporting using Ushahidi, getting information from multiple sources, including twitter, USSD, XMPP etc.
- Khan Academy Offline (Second runner up) – off line video content and exercises for use on low cost Android devices in schools, assisting teachers and supplementing the class room experience. The solution developed will be used in African Schools For Excellence
Other solutions (in alphabetical order):
- Car Alert – tool to assist neighbourhood watches to manage details about suspicious vehicles (registration number, description, color etc) and allows off-line identification and verification via smartphones. The project is to be piloted in Faerie Glen neighbourhood watch, Pretoria
- Drip Irrigation Management – online calculator for water requirements of vegetable irrigation. Part of a larger project by Sangonet to enable farmers to grow vegetables for markets, thereby enabling them economically.
- Donor management – initiative started at RHoK Pretoria December 2011, and assist charities with fund raising and relationship management
- Virtual laboratory – creating classroom experiments in physics and chemistry online, this is an ambitious undertaking with huge potential and used to hackathon as a kick-off. Work will continue as part on an UNISA initiative
H2O Detective
H2O Detective continued work started at the water hackathon and emerged winners of the event! Second was Citizen reporting (started at RHoK Pretoria December 2011) and third Khan Academy offline (African School for Excellence)
H2O Detective uses an Android mobile application that connects to an e-BreadBoard backend to assist local government in the management of water. The product will be piloted in Hermanus by SeeSawDo.
The team comprised members from two local startups: Sowertech (Nathi, Obakeng, Lawrence) and Innoprenez (Klaas)
