Smart House Access Control – Breathing life into its electrons

Tuesday evening at the build we had lots of phun. I was nearing completion of the first prototype of Smart House Access Control (SHAC) and appreciated the assistance, debugging and moral support received from Andrew and Schalk to finish the first prototype.

The “sophistication” gets described in a bit more detail in my video hereunder.

In short, the technical jargon goes something like this: SmartPhoneBrowser -> GoogleAppEngine -> web2py -> enter.house4hack -> jQueryMobile -> Authenticate SingleSignOn-> -> ViaGmail -> enter.house4hack -> GateAccess -> http.request(rolling_code) -> House4HackADSL -> Arduino -> EthernetShield -> TinyWebServer -> RollingCodeValidate -> PinHigh -> Relay -> ElectronicGate -> Open!

On that presentation at an upcoming meetup, absolutely! I have never used any of the above “jargon”-technologies before,  2 weeks and a bit in the making/learning, so although I learnt a lot and would love to share all of the uber kewl-ness with da House, I would also like to get some feedback on improvements and further ideas.

Check out this video I made which gives a more in depth look at the guts of what makes the SHAC tick.

Last night at the build, Philip (with the help of Andrew) completed the first working prototype of SHAC – Smart House Access Control.  This is a very sophisticated access control system which is connected to the cloud – sorry a bit lame, but really 🙂 SHAC uses an AWS instance for administrating the access control and sends an encrypted message to the house server to open the gate or front door.  The encryption uses a rolling code which is similar to KeyLog found in most car remotes.

Check out this short video – Philip promised to give us a presentation at an upcoming meetup.

Build Tuesdays

Just a reminder, we are planning our first of many regular Build Tuesdays at 18:00 – 21:00 tonight.

If you want to chat and hangout or build something or show off what you have built, please come join us.

I recently bought the Internet of Things kit from Netram – anyone who is interrested in that sort of thing are welcome to try it out.

The guys at Netram also gave me a tin of proto-plastic, this is pretty amazing stuff, heat with hot water and it turns into clay, when cool it goes back to plastic.  I will bring this along as well for folks to try it out.
