A sign of life. In an arid desert.

For well over a couple of years now, I have been looking to make contact with a community of hackers and makers in South Africa. Much to my chagrin, South Africa has been an arid desert.  No hackers.  No makers. South Africa may have beautiful places and great weather.  However, as far as creating and making things went, South Africa was just a dark gaping hole.

The first sign of life seemed to crack through the parched desert when I stumbled upon a HackerSpace called House4Hack a mere 15 minutes away from my house. With familial and work responsibilities it took me a full month until I could actually make it on Tueday nights – when they meet regularly.

I was very excited to finally make it. And I was not disappointed.

House4Hack is probably the coolest place that I have seen since I got to South Africa. Let me repeat that, I have been here for four years and I think that it is the coolest place that I have seen.  More than Plett. More than Capetown.  This place should be a tourist attraction.  Well, maybe not a tourist attraction but definitely a place where students, teenagers, and curious people should be coming to hangout and make things.

House4Hack is a place where people make things. Create things. Work on projects. With people from diverse backgrounds, different areas of expertise, people are able to collaborate with each other to create projects that individually would have been impossible to accomplish.

Last night was the first get together of the 2012 year. There are some awesome projects in the pipeline. I’m excited.

My prediction: in the next 5 years there will be a major corporation in South Africa that will be born out of House4Hack.

The revolution has begun. The arid desert will turn into an oasis.

One question remains. Will you be part of it?
