Schalk Heunis – Nick: Skullkey
I studied as an electrical engineer and did post-graduate work on Probablistic Methods Applied to Power Systems. I completed a PhD on this topic in 2000. I have an unhealthy appetite and love for data – analysing data, discovering relationships and helping folks to make better decisions using these insights. Most of this I do using a language called R, but I also code some Java and hack Arduino’s in my sparetime. Using these skills, I currently provide specialist consulting and contract research services in the energy sector.
Tobie Nortje – Nick:Tooblippe
I am a registered Professional Engineer with ECSA, and obtained my Degree in Electrical Engineering from Stellenbosch University. “I have nothing to say of my working life, only that a tie is a noose, and inverted though it is, it will hang a man nonetheless if he’s not careful.” – After reading this bit in Life of Pi, I realised that I need to get out of the corporate world and start “Building stuff”. I love everything tech and interweb. Python got me into programming again and Arduino into building stuff. When I was two I opened our TV with a blunt knife. When I turned 30 I bought a monster set of Lego. When I turned 34 I bought all the Meccanno I could afford. Now at 35 36 we are building a hacker space. Pretty damn awesome! More about me HERE
Andrew Turpin – Nick: Bank Builder
I started out as a science teacher, became a radio ham (ZR6TUR) , built an airplane (ZU-EJN) with my father and became a pilot, grew and sold a few companies. I am an eternal student, have tried my hand at teaching, preaching, programming, piloting and managing companies, amongst other things, before settling into my current trajectory as a professional banker. I am a keen hacker by night and a bank builder by day. Oh, and I read a lot. House4Hack is the first true hacker space in South Africa and I am proud to be part of it!

I was born in Hamburg, Germany in ’75. Finished school at the European School II in Bruxelles, Belgium then moved for an MA Economics and MSc Software Tech to Edinburgh, Scotland. Worked as a systems integration consultant for SAP (Systems Integration, then SAP AG) on various projects in Europe and abroad. First came to South Africa in 2006. Decided to stay a little longer in 2011 when I joined IZAZI – a great SA consulting house with a focus on SAP and banking. Love Kina. software, open source, most things with a switch, diving, HJ62 and beautiful SA. Want to learn more about electronics, build gadgets, network, exchange ideas = have fun.
I am an Electronics Engineer with a passion for software engineering and a keen interest in hacking together hardware. While my career mostly involved writing web applications in Java and Javascript, I had also worked at UEC writing embedded firmware for satellite decoders, and also built several web startups on Ruby on Rails. I currently develop Android applications as a freelancer. In my spare time I also built amplifiers, a home theatre subwoofer, a guitar amp for my electric guitar, alarm system sensors and additions, a home automation system, and currently an Android accessory. See my website for more.

I have always been interested in science, technology and cool gadgets and have learned a good deal of IT thanks to my great love HC. I have helped run, support and promote various web sites. At the moment, I operate Big-5.co.za, a South African NING based social event calendar. I’m also a partner in the Phoenix Studios where I have been involved in projects ranging from fashion photography, to concept furniture and fine art installations .
I would like to learn more about mobile technology, experiment with green energy and
and meet likeminded people to bring new products to market.
Philip Booysen – Nick: zer0tilt
I studied as an electrical/electronics engineer complimented with computer science and mathematics. Although I still love mathematics to this day as a hobby, and leverage off engineering thought patterns, I became entrenched with Linux and Open Source and practiced it as my full-time hobby since leaving varsity. Today, after 21 years of exclusively using Linux, I keep myself busy during the day with making Enterprise Linux infrastructure highly available, fault-tolerant and load balanced. I am also on an entrepreneurial adventure building Raspberry Pi and Arduino based products to solve real world problems. In my spare-time I exercise my right as free and open minded Arduino-tinkerer, Open Source code-spawner, idea-generator and generally prefer to take part in collaborative intelligence activities. The Makerspace we started fits my description of excitement, phun and endless potential.
